Charles Town, Ranson, Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry have deep roots in history that date back to President George Washington and his family. Washington originally surveyed the region in the mid-1700s as a young man and encouraged many of his family members to settle in the area. His youngest brother, Charles, founded Charles Town. Today, many homes and other structures dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s are recognized on the Historic Register of Historic Places. Efforts to preserve the past can also be seen in the numerous parks and preserves throughout the area.
